== Add citation style 2 to the visual editor == CS2 is arguably locally popular, but you can't add it easily in VE. According to [[mw:Help:VisualEditor/VE_as_the_main_editor#Add_locally_popular_Cite_templates_to_the_Cite_menu|this page]] you can do this, so I don't see why not. [[User:Aaron Liu|Aaron Liu]] ([[User talk:Aaron Liu|talk]]) 03:13, 9 August 2022 (UTC) :Indeed. I like CS2 (the {{tl|citation}} template) as it eliminates the silly distinction between web and newspapers for sources such as ''The Guardian'' or ''NYT'' which are both. And I like [[WP:LDR|list-defined references]] too. So, I use the generate function in VE to create the citations and then toggle to the wikitext editor to reformat them into my preferred format. This is a hassle and so it would be good if this were to be a supported preference. [[user:Andrew Davidson|Andrew]]π([[user talk:Andrew Davidson|talk]]) 16:41, 9 August 2022 (UTC) ::Cite β Manual β Basic β Insert any template you want. [[User:Whatamidoing (WMF)|Whatamidoing (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF)|talk]]) 00:01, 11 August 2022 (UTC) :::Yes, that's a way to remain in the visual editor, but filling out the template is quite the hassle that simply generating, tweaking, and then switching the template to [[Template:Citation]] is much easier [[User:Aaron Liu|Aaron Liu]] ([[User talk:Aaron Liu|talk]]) 02:29, 11 August 2022 (UTC) ::::As you can see from the documentation you linked above, you could add {{tl|citation}} to the list. However, the auto-filling citoid service probably wouldn't use it much (or at all) in practice. It doesn't have a concept of "style" or article-specific conventions. It only has a concept of "source type". All sources of a given type are put into the same template. If most editors want news sites like ''The Guardian'' or ''New York Times'' to use {{tl|cite news}}, then it will fill out {{tl|cite news}} for those websites in all articles, even if you wanted it to use {{tl|citation}} for those sources in the article you're editing. [[User:Whatamidoing (WMF)|Whatamidoing (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF)|talk]]) 04:59, 13 August 2022 (UTC) :::::So that means that this proposal can do two things: 1. Add CS2 to the manual tab, which only saves 2 clicks, and is unable to take advantage of citoid. 2. add some switch to the insert button that will allow us to switch to cs2 or add the switch to preferences, which would require some scripts [[User:Aaron Liu|Aaron Liu]] ([[User talk:Aaron Liu|talk]]) 17:37, 13 August 2022 (UTC) * '''More like add everything to VE''' - Visual editor is legitimately Wikipedia's most useful tool, and it should be fully functional. Not being able to use wiki-markup, edit references in VE when they're in a template or give them ref names is ridiculous. Doesn't Wikimedia make hundreds of millions per year? It should not be much of a task to find people to work on that. β[[User:VersaceSpace|VersaceSpace]] [[User talk:VersaceSpace|π]] 02:43, 11 August 2022 (UTC) *:@[[User:VersaceSpace|VersaceSpace]], what other kinds of wiki-markup do you want to use in the visual editor? "Rich editing" of templates is surprisingly difficult (think "a large team for a couple of years" difficult, but no worse than that). Ref names were available in 2013, and then removed. I don't remember why it was removed (only that it was there, and then it wasn't), but since it once existed, I assume that it would be manageable. It was proposed in the Community Wishlist in the past, but didn't get enough votes to win. *:What else do you miss? [[User:Whatamidoing (WMF)|Whatamidoing (WMF)]] ([[User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF)|talk]]) 04:53, 13 August 2022 (UTC) *::They may be referring to using wiki markup on tables in VE. [[User:Aaron Liu|Aaron Liu]] ([[User talk:Aaron Liu|talk]]) 17:33, 13 August 2022 (UTC) *::let me clarify, of course making ''every'' relevant template WYSIWYG-able would be a big task, but if that's reduced to just infoboxes and navboxes + 5 others, i assume that wouldn't require so much time. and by using wiki-markup i mean being able to type "<nowiki> '' </nowiki>" and get italics etc. β[[User:VersaceSpace|VersaceSpace]] [[User talk:VersaceSpace|π]] 23:10, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
